About Mark Raynes Roberts

Born in Sutton Coldfield, England in 1961, Mark Raynes Roberts trained at the Birmingham City University, Institute of Art + Design, where he studied jewellery and silversmithing, before specilazing in hand engraving under the mentorship of Ronald Pennell and Neil Oliver. After graduating with honors and several prestigious awards from the British Jewellers Association, he immigrated to Toronto, Canada, where he established Raynes Art + Design Ltd, and a world wide reputation as a designer of original works of art in crystal over the past 30 years. His crystal art has been exhibited in Canada, England, Sweden and the United States, and resides in art collections around the world.

Mark Raynes Roberts works primarily using diamond wheel intaglio engraving and stippling. This combination of ancient techniques is an important feature of the artist's work and a recognizable signature. The deep intaglio wheel engraving providing the strength and dimension, while the stippling technique provides the ethereal sensitivity to the finished work. Major architectural glass installations have also been designed and created by the artist, including the 53ft engraved glass mural, "A View To Our Heritage" located at the Health Sciences Library, at mcMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, which is now designated a cultural property of Canada As the artist comments "Crystal continues to intrigue me, as it provides limitless possibilities as a canvas, reflecting and distorting the narrative message being communicated."
