Guild Drill Guidelines

Guidelines for the Use of the Guild Drills

Basic Information:

The Guild currently owns 12 drills (plus two spares). These are available for use by members wishing to run occasional workshops or courses, on payment of a small service charge of £5 per usage (not per drill). This sum contributes towards (but does not wholly cover) the Guild’s costs in relation to the drills (i.e. annual PAT testing, servicing and repairs). The Guild makes the drills available to members as a service and with the purpose of encouraging the teaching of glass engraving. The continuation of this service relies on members abiding by the following guidelines.

  1. The drills may not be used for regular courses where this would restrict their availability to other members. Members planning to start regular courses should make other arrangements.
  2. The Guild does not pay for the drills to be delivered to or collected from members who wish to use them. If a member wishes to borrow the drills, he or she must arrange to collect them from the member who currently has them. Members borrowing the drills must be prepared to make reasonable arrangements to pass on the drills to the next member using them, and be prepared to meet the next borrower half way to hand over the drills if at all possible. Ultimately the responsibility for collection is with the person who next wishes to borrow them.
  3. To avoid double bookings and confusion about the whereabouts of the drills, ALL bookings must be made through the drills co-ordinator. This is currently Rob Page who can be contacted by phone on 07776-386-835 or by e-mail on robert.page130@googlemail.com.

The procedure for booking the drills

    1. Contact the drills co-ordinator to ensure that the drills are available on the dates you need them. Do this before confirming the date of your workshop!
    2. Pay the service charge to the Guild Administrator (NOT to Rob Page) to secure your booking. If you require a receipt for your payment please send a stamped addressed envelope with your cheque. The Guild Administrator will inform the drills co-ordinator when she receives your payment.
    3. A month or so ahead of time, find out from the drills co-ordinator who currently holds the drills and contact the member concerned to make arrangements for collecting them. Do not leave this to the last moment. If you do, you cannot expect the member who has the drills to drop everything to get them to you. If you wish to book the drills at short notice, you should contact the drills co-ordinator as soon as possible.
    4. If when you come to make final arrangements for collecting the drills you find that collection is not feasible, for whatever reason, the Guild will refund your service charge. The Guild will not be responsible for any other losses, financial or otherwise, which you may incur as a result.
    5. The Guild drills are regularly serviced. But when you receive the drills you should check that they are working well before your event. You are also responsible for checking with the drills co-ordinator that the PAT certificate is up to date if that is a requirement for your workshop. The Guild does not warrant that the drills are in good order when you come to use them and will not be responsible for any losses which result from a mechanical failure. If you become aware of a mechanical problem with one of the drills, please inform the drills co-ordinator as soon as possible.
    6. PLEASE do not attempt to fix a faulty drill yourself.
    7. If the PAT certificate runs out while the drills are in your possession, you may be asked to make arrangements to have the drills PAT tested and the certificate renewed. The cost of the test will be refunded by the Guild. If it is not feasible for you to arrange the test, you must return the drills to the drills co-ordinator so that he can do so.

The system for borrowing the drills relies on reasonable co-operation between members who use them. If you book the drills some time in advance, the drills co-ordinator will make reasonable efforts to warn you if, for example, the drills are subsequently borrowed by someone who lives at a distance. However, he is not responsible for doing so, and neither he nor the Guild can be held responsible for ensuring that the drills are available to members who have booked them.
