Craft Assessment

Craft Assessment

This is the process that takes place when a Lay (or student) member wishes to be assessed for Craft membership.

When are the assessments?

Two Assessments are held each year in November and May. More assessments may be scheduled if necessary. At least 2 weeks notice is required from a member who wishes to submit their work for assessment to enable the assessors to be informed.

Who can submit work for Assessment?

All candidates must be fully paid-up Lay (or Student) members of the Guild of Glass Engravers.

What kind of work should be submitted?

Three pieces of glass engraving are required to be submitted. Technique, artistic and design ability, imagination and originality will be assessed. To ensure anonymity during the assessment, names on work should be covered over or obscured electronically. Pieces must be the candidate’s own unaided work and must not be work which has been done under a tutor’s supervision, or work which is a repeat of a piece previously engraved during a class or tutorial.

What is the procedure for application?

A member wishing to apply for assessment should complete the assessment application form. Contact the Guild Administrator for the form and the next available assessment date.

Applications are welcomed on the understanding that the candidate accepts
the conditions as outlined here. The requirements will be strictly observed.

What does it cost?

There is a £20 assessment fee which must be sent to the administrator. The fee will, if the assessment is successful, be put towards the cost of the applicant’s subscription for the first year of Craft membership.

Who does the assessment?

Three Fellows or two Fellows and one Associate Fellow are required to form the Assessment Panel. The identity of the Assessors should as far as possible remain confidential. Any communication resulting after the assessment must be in writing and addressed to the Chairman via the Guild Administrator by e-mail or post. Do NOT contact the assessors.

Please Note:

A Lay Member may be recommended for Associate Fellowship if the work is of an extremely high standard. This is not normal, but if someone comes into the Guild as an engraver of a notable standard this is an option open to the Assessors. As in the case of all assessments, the recommendation of the Assessors will be put to the Guild Council for ratification.

What happens after the assessment?

The Assessment Panel’s report, consisting of marks awarded in the required assessment areas together with constructive comments, will be sent to the candidate after the next Council meeting following the assessment date, whether or not the candidate has passed the assessment. The Panel’s powers are restricted to making recommendations to the Council, who may or may not decide to elect applicants or to accept the recommendations. It is not possible for the assessors to enter into any further correspondence concerning the results.

Applications are welcome on the understanding the conditions are accepted, and the requirements will be strictly observed.

Please contact the guild administrator for a copy of the form for Craft Member Assessment.
