In 2020 I began a B.A. hons. course in Glass and Ceramics at the University of Sunderland, where I am learning more about the science of working with glass, and exploring new skills – glassblowing, sandblasting and more, as well as broadening my range in kiln fired glass. My particular interest is in bringing together different techniques to express feelings about the wildlife and landscape of my home in North Yorkshire and of the seascapes and urban surroundings of Sunderland.
About my Work:
The two pieces I have chosen to submit combine the organic shapes of ‘wild’ glassblowing with the greater precision of sandblasting, giving mystery and movement to the tourmaline colours of the sea, sometimes transparent, sometimes glistening, always fascinating.
The Engraving:
"Limpet Rock" is 16cm high and 13cm wide
Furnace glass, blown by the artist into clay slabs moulded on limpet covered rocks, sandblasted to emphasize the relief design.
Photographed by the artist
"Bladderwrack Rock" is 15cm high and 15cm wide
Furnace glass, blown by the artist into a pot of Bladderwrack seaweed, sandblasted to emphasize the relief design.
Photographed by the artist
