About my Work:
My name is Caoimhe Stopes. I am a final year student in the glass and ceramics course in NCAD, Dublin, Ireland. I am primarily a glass student who works mostly with hot glass via lamp working. I am extremely passionate about glass and trying to make a mark on the Irish glass community.
A lot of my motivation is trying to make glass, something the average person thinks as so stiff and fragile, look natural. Something that wants to be touched.
My main inspiration is the word around us as well as growing off of the things that really touch me. For instance, the piece I am submitting today is "Persephone". Although it just looks like the natural form of a pomegranate, the meaning is a lot deeper. This piece is inspired by the poem "The Pomegranate" by Eavan Poland, the renowned Irish poet. This poem tells the story of a mother's hesitancy to let her child grow into a woman but the need to do so. It's told through metaphors of the mythology of Persephone and Ceres.
This piece is very personal to me as this is something that I, as a daughter of a mother, have seen from the perspective of Persephone
