Cut out optical crystal sheet balanced on top of elongated pyramid crystal block.
On reverse side of the block, a man doing yoga balance pose, above him, an oak tree. On obverse side of block, tree roots engraved and below, stippled dots which represent ‘threads’ of a Mycellium fungal organism. These threads are important for trees as they connect individual plants together to transfer water, nitrogen, carbon and other minerals.
Obverse side, an engraved sleeping baby and, on reverse side, engraved a floating whale. They represent air and water/sea - when we live in a balanced world, we can sleep well. Engraved with drill and copper wheel.

Peter Cummings is largely a self taught glass engraver, learning over 30 years from books and now the internet. Beginning with drills and some sandblasting, he bought a Merker portable lathe and diamond wheels 12 years ago. Lots of practice with help and encouragement from the "Copper Wheel Engravers"group and members keeps him keen to improve his skills.
Living in a regional town in South Eastern Australia means difficulties getting suitable blanks to engrave, gallery and retail outlets have no idea of the craft, as well as a glass establishment that refuses to recognise the art form.
Practicing new forms is opening options in the sculpture area, and adding to printmaking experiments. The future looks adventurous.

After more than two decades in the glass trade, Hugh transitioned to a new chapter, working with organisations such as the YMCA to support vulnerable individuals. In 2005, he returned to Coventry, where he continued glass engraving as a hobby, driven by his enduring passion for handmade craftsmanship.
Reflecting on his lifelong appreciation for craft work, "Since childhood, I have always cherished handmade items, captivated by the incredible craftsmanship people can achieve."
This year, Hugh launched a podcast, "Made with These Hands," to celebrate and support craftspeople across the country. Through the podcast, he hopes to inspire the next generation to explore the world of crafting.
As he looks to the future, Hugh remains committed to making a positive impact in his community and championing the art of craftsmanship. He believes everyone has the potential to create something beautiful.

Lesley was born in Salisbury, Rhodesia (now Harare, Zimbabwe) into a family of artists. She was taking painting commissions from the age of 13. In 1983, she stumbled on the art of glass engraving and never looked back.
“I scratched a simple flower, using a basic diamond pencil, and on holding it up to the light I was overwhelmed with emotion, its magical characteristics were such a delight. It changed the course of my life immediately.”
Lesley proceeded to teach herself with books and videos tapes purchased from the UK (no computers or internet in those days). Within a few months she was being commissioned by family and friends, so a small business began and flourished for the next 19 years in Zimbabwe, using both drill and sandblasting techniques on the smallest glasses to panels and sliding doors.

I am now a craft member of the Guild and a member of the Northern Branch.
The theme for our recent meeting was to plan a design with nuts. This is a square, 23 cm plate, with 3 cm raised-edges. Engraved on the back of the dish with a micromotor electric drill using a selection of burrs stones and rubbers. Engraved on the back of the dish so that if it was used to hold nuts, the engraving would not be scratched by them. Engraved from top left, clockwise, hazel nuts, horse chestnuts, beech nuts and walnuts at various stages of development. Then for fun, engraved a squirrel as they are always hunting for nuts amongst the leaves. This was completed at home in November 2024 after the Northern branch meeting.

I was invited earlier on in the year if I would like to engrave a piece for the Balmoral Estate. Their shop was being upgraded and they were looking for an exclusive bespoke piece of art. I spent a morning walking around the estate taking photographs and trying to get a feel of what I would include in the engraving and it had been specified that the garden and trees was an important feature.
I chose a large bowl as knew this would give me the capacity and depth to get the 3d effect I was looking for.
I am delighted to add that my piece is now on display.
