South West Branch GGE News

Rob Page - Treasurer

Our February meeting at West Buckland Village Hall near Wellington in Somerset was a lot of fun. Chris Ainslie showed us how to do verre églomisé and he had kindly prepared some small pieces of glass with silver leaf ready for us all to have a go. He'd brought along all the equipment we needed and everyone took home their own piece. We could spray the back of our own glass with black paint at home if we wished and perhaps even find a small frame to fit our finished results.

Our meetings in West Buckland are a good mixture of practical sessions and talks which often have demonstrations afterwards. We always find we learn something new and we also enjoy bringing along some of our latest works for constructive criticism by the rest of our group.

On Sunday 22nd March we went on one of our occasional outings. This time a large group of us met at the Tea Rooms in Moreton in Dorset for a delicious lunch and we followed this with a guided tour of the beautiful engraved windows in the church of St.Nicholas in Moreton. Every window has been replaced by engraved glass and (apart from a small one by his son Simon) they were done over a period of 30 years by the late Laurence Whistler, who was one of the founder members of our Guild. Seeing this large body of work enabled us to appreciate how his style progressed and no photographs we might have seen previously really prepared us for viewing the actual windows on a gloriously sunny day. While some windows were hard to see in the afternoon light, others were shown to full advantage with the sunlight streaming in and the engravings backed by dark evergreen trees. It was especially beneficial to be guided by a local lady who knew the windows and their symbolism well. Our thanks to Rob Page for organising this outing for us.

Our next meeting will be on Sunday 5th July at West Buckland. We will hold our short AGM but we'll also have a troubleshooting session for people to discuss any engraving problems they may be having plus our annual bring and share lunch. We will be discussing our plans for our Branch exhibition which we hope to arrange for Easter 2016 at a new and exciting venue. More news on that later.
