South West Branch GGE News
The South West Branch met on Sunday 16th March at our usual venue of West Buckland Village Hall, which is just off Junction 26 of the M5 in Somerset. Numbers were down because a lot of members had other commitments that day but those that attended had a very interesting and enjoyable meeting.
Rob Page had kindly brought his sandblaster and set it up ready to use in a van in the car park of the hall. He'd also brought some spare glass for people to use. Sue Burne brought some sticky backed plastic and scissors plus some craft stickers for people to experiment with. Everyone who wished to try did some masking on glass then experimented with the sandblaster. We were fortunate that it was a bright sunny day so the weather was perfect for working outside.
After lunch Sue gave a talk with a powerpoint slideshow called The Wonder of Glass. This touched on the history of glass but was more about how this very important material has affected and will affect society. For glass engravers who may have only been used to the idea of glass as a craft medium this was perhaps an insight into how amazing it is.
The branch also discussed, and will be having further discussions, about a new venue for a branch exhibition in 2015 and it was decided that this will probably be delayed until late in that year to avoid clashing with other events and to give us all a chance to do new work.
Our next meeting will be on Sunday 29th June at West Buckland Village Hall. This will be our troubleshooting and sharing ideas session but we also hope people will bring their drills to do some practical work. Our lunch will be a bring and share buffet meal and we will also be holding a short AGM.
